Friday January 11, 8pm in 26-100
Saturday January 12, 7pm and 10pm in 26-100
Milos Forman's 5 academy award-winning adaptation of Ken Kesey's acclaimed 1962 novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a satire set among the patients and workers in a mental institution. It tells the story (narrated by an inmate) of an energetic con man who seeks institutionalization as a means of escaping the rigors of a prison work farm. Before long, in order to reduce the sexual and emotional impotence of the men at the institution, he begins to challenge the dictatorial Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher, Best Actress 1975), irrevocably altering the destiny of those in the ward. The story is made up of a series of skirmishes between McMurphy (Jack Nicholson Best Actor 1975) and Big Nurse. McMurphy becomes a hero, changing the life of the inmates, but pays with a lobotomy which turns him into a vegetable. Bromden, the narrator, performes the final act by smothering McMurphy with a pillow and running away to freedom.

Ken Kesey died on November 10th, 2001, and LSC shows this film in tribute to his memory.

In the near future, where children are being born with a special X-Factor in their genes, giving them special powers, and making them "mutants", the seeds of a new Holocaust are being sewn by Senator Robert Kelly (Bruce Davison). The situation brings fellow mutants and former friends Erik Lehnsherr (Ian McKellen), a.k.a. Magneto, and Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) into opposition. While Xavier seeks to stop the hatred toward mutants peacefully, Magneto seeks to even things out, with a machine that would speed up the mutation process in all humans, making everyone equal. To stop Magneto, Xavier brings together a special group of mutants called "X-Men". In the meantime, 2 mysterious mutants, one named Logan (Hugh Jackman), a powerful and agressive mutant with no past, no memories, and a young girl named Rogue (Anna Paquin) emerge. Their quests for identities eventually land them in the sights of Xavier and Magneto, but for what purpose? Rated PG-13 for sci-fi action violence.

  • Galaxy Quest (1999) (PG) 102 minutes
    Saturday January 26, at 10:00pm in 26-100

Eighteen years after their sci-fi adventure show "Galaxy Quest" was cancelled, actors Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen), Gwen DeMarco (Sigourney Weaver), Alexander Dane (Alan Rickman), Tommy Webber (Daryl Mitchell), and Fred Kwan (Tony Shalhoub) are making apperances at sci-fi conventions and store openings in costume and character. They're wallowing in despair and at each other's throats until aliens known as Thermians arrive and, having mistook the show for fact and consequently modeling their entire culture around it, take them into space to save them from the genocidal General Sarris and his armada. Rated PG for some action violence, mild language and sensuality.

Saturday January 26, at midnight in 26-100
    Sunday January 27, at 7:00pm in 26-100

Vincent (Ethan Hawke) is one of the last "natural" babies born into a sterile, genetically-enhanced world, where life expectancy and disease likelihood are ascertained at birth. Myopic and due to die at 30, he has no chance of a career in a society that now discriminates against your genes, instead of your gender, race or religion. Going underground, he assumes the identity of Jerome, crippled in an accident, and achieves prominence in the Gattaca Corporation, where he is selected for his lifelong desire: a manned mission to Titan. Constantly passing gene tests by diligently using samples of Jerome's hair, skin, blood and urine, his now-perfect world is thrown into increasing desperation, his dream within reach, when the mission director is killed - and he carelessly loses an eyelash at the scene! Certain that they know the murderer's ID, but unable to track down the former Vincent, the police start to close in, with extra searches, and new gene tests. With the once-in-a-lifetime launch only days away, Vincent must avoid arousing suspicion, while passing the tests, evading the police, and not knowing whom he can trust... Rated PG-13 for brief violent images, language, and some sexuality.

  • Short: Gravity (1976) (2:10am)

In this spoof of public-school educational films, young Mary Jane asks the question, "What is gravity?" After asking various (dysfunctional) family members without success, she then asks Dr. Waxman of the Karl LaFong Foundation for Gravitational Research (motto: "heads in the clouds and feet on the ground"), who explains that gravity is caused by a substance named GR12. Unfortunately, the world is running out of GR12. The cartoon character Jiminy Gravity then explains (in song) how we can conserve gravity with such practices as sitting on the floor and carrying helium balloons.

In this world, programs (who are the doubles of their users) are being subjugated by the MCP, his right-hand man Sark, and the Warrior Elite of the MCP. Unless the programs pledge allegiance to the MCP and renounce their users, they are subject to constantly being forced into gladiatorial contests on the Game Grid until they de-rezz (die).
