Featuring special shorts, fun activities, extra refreshments, and a variety of sci-fi films. Admission at 7pm is $6, and drops to $3 after midnight. The marathon features five full length films and several short features. |

Fantastic Planet (La Planète Sauvage) (1973) January 27, 2007 at 7:00pm in 26-100. Fantastic Planet is Rene Laloux's bizarre, enthralling adaptation of Stefan Wul's allegorical science-fiction novel. The eye-popping underground sensation was also a critical success, winning awards at several prestigious film festivals (most notably, the Grand Prix in 1973 at Cannes). Set on the planet Ygam, the film depicts a world in which Draags--a gigantic race of blue alien beings--run the show. Their pets are human beings--or, as they are known in Laloux's world, Oms--who are mistreated by their devious owners. Fed up with the abuse, one Om organizes his brethren and stages a mutiny that will forever change life on Ygam. [www.rottentomatoes.com]

The Fifth Element (1997) (Dolby Digital) January 27, 2007 at 9:00 pm in 26-100. A visual feast combining ancient mysticism, cyberpunk sensibilities, flamboyant entertainment personalities, and gun-toting alien mercenaries. In the 23rd century, Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), an ex-special forces agent who now practices as a down-and-out cabbie, finds himself caught in a struggle to defy a prophesied Evil from destroying the Earth when a mysterious woman (Milla Jovovich) falls into the back seat of his cab. Pursued by both the government and a powerful magnate enlisted by the forces of Evil (Gary Oldman), the woman is the key to Earth's salvation, known only as the Fifth Element. The Dark Crystal (1982) January 28, 2007 at 11:30pm in 26-100. Featuring fantastical puppet flora and fauna from Muppet man Jim Henson, this dark but wonderful children's movie follows Jen and Kira, two young Gelflings who are the last of their kind, as they try to fulfill the prophecy of the Dark Crystal. Jen's wise master reveals on his deathbed that only a Gelfling will mend the crystal that cracked 1,000 years ago and placed the land under the dark rule of the evil, selfish Skeksis. To break the prophecy, the Skeksis killed all the Gelflings, and only Jen and Kira escaped their wrath. Now, though, Jen and Kira must journey into the heart of the Skeksis castle to reach the crystal and return the land to its former goodness. [www.rottentomatoes.com]

Delicatessen (1991) January 28, 2007 at 1:30am in 26-100. After years of working successfully in commercials and music videos, French directors Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet make a splashing feature-film debut, Delicatessen, a hysterical exercise in style. Scripted by comic book writer and frequent Caro and Jeunet collaborator Gilles Adrien, the story follows a sweet-natured clown, Louison (Dominique Pinon), who moves into a run down apartment building with a delicatessen on the ground floor and falls in love with the butcher's daughter, Julie Clapet (Marie-Laure Dougnac). When it turns out that Julie's father (Jean-Claude Dreyfus) is actually butchering human beings and selling the meat to the carnivorous tenants of the building, Julie must decide if she will remain loyal to her father's business or expose the truth in order to save Louison from being the next victim. Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982) January 28, 2007 at 4:00am in 26-100, and REPLAY January 28, 2007 at 8:00pm in 26-100. Khan, a genetically engineered "superman" prone to megalomaniacal delusions, was exiled years ago to the barren planet Ceti Alpha 5. He blames Admiral Kirk for his hard fate, as well as for his son's death, and vows revenge. When Commander Chekov mistakenly beams down to Khan's lair, the villain finally has a means of escape. Using a parasitic creature that allows him to control the minds of his victims, Khan seizes command of the Starship Reliant. From there he hopes to lure Kirk to his death, using equipment stolen from an experimental research project. These devices allow him to trigger something known as the "Genesis Effect" -- a means of generating new life from existing matter. Khan plans to use the creation machines as weapons, because the same fire of life that creates new worlds must destroy what existed before. Kirk and crew need all the courage and cunning they can muster in order to save their friend and silence Khan forever. [www.rottentomatoes.com]
