The medical crises of ER are handled with the casual indifference of The Office in this Un Certain Regard winner at the 2005 Cannes Festival. Dante Lazarescu, a bad-tempered old man, falls sick one evening and calls an ambulance, only to get shunted from hospital to hospital as he slowly slips away while trapped in the allegorical circles of hospital hell. The film leavens its seriousness with delightful dialogue and characteristic dark humor, while still displaying a deep rooted humanity.
