Bueller meets Bogart in this genre-busting first feature film by
director Rian Johnson, and winner of the Sundance Film Festival's
Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision in 2005. Weaving together
the conventions and even the hard-boiled dialogue of film noir with the
angst of teenage dramas, the film follows Brendan, a loner and
quintessential outsider, who becomes consumed with finding his
ex-girlfriend Emily after she vanishes following a panicked phone call.
With his only peer, the Brain, as a fellow shamus, and keeping the
movie's police chief stand-in, the school's assistant vice principal,
only partially informed, Brendan encounters all the usual suspects
(including a femme fatale!) while diligently tracing Emily's movements.
"This year's Donnie Darko? Brick is in a class of its own, showing neither a hint of pretension nor convolution."
