This visually stunning and superlatively acted film takes place during the Napoleonic Wars, on a British ship named the HMS Surprise. Its captain is Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe), a trusted warrior with a soft spot for chamber music, which he enjoys as violin-cello duets with his ship's surgeon (Paul Bettany). Locked within the tight quarters of a naval ship, these men and their associates lead a dangerous and compelling existence which is put in jeopardy by the appearance of a large French warship. Full-scale, historically accurate, seaworthy ships were built and a real tycoon was filmed, contributing to the film's remarkable realism and ultimate emotional power.

"an exuberant sea adventure told with uncommon intelligence"
