Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Amores Perros) presents a film in English
about three very diffrent people, brought together through circumstance and
tragedy. Paul Rivers (Sean Penn) is a mathematician with a bad heart and a bad
marriage to an Englishwoman (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Christina Peck (Naomi Watts) is an
ex-cokehead who treasures her husband and two daughters. Jack Jordan (Benicio
del Toro) is an ex-convict and born-again Christian whose family has likewise
provided him comfort in his reform.
This gripping drama is told piecewise in a nonlinear fashion, creating a unique
psychological effect. Each scene has an emotional significance which we can
clearly see but do not necessarily understand until several more scenes have
been presented. When we do finally realize what has happened, its deeper meaning
has had time to sink in. Meanwhile, we learn with the characters about love,
loss, desire, courage, and redemption.
"One of the most powerful films to hit theaters this year."
